Indian Devil Tree or Blackboard Tree (ஏழிலைப்பாலை)

 

Alstonia scholaris, ஏழிலைபலை The species name scholaris refers that the timber of this tree has been used to make wooden slates for school children. Flowering was notice during November and December.

நீர்மருது (அ) நீர்மத்தி

Terminalia arjuna, Neer Maruthu or Neer Mathi, one of the oldest tree at Anaikatti, probably 100 years old. Arjuna tree mainly occurs where there is good water source mostly, along the bank of river beds. Its also play a vital role in retaining the ground water source.

Cultural Importance :Arjuna is one of the sacred tree of India. It has acquired the social and religious sanctity with the passage of time. It is said that Arjuna has been born of the two sons of Kubair after saint Narada cursed him. The leaves and flowers of this tree are offered to the Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganpati on the several religious occasions. Sausage Tree (Kigelia pinnata) Native to South Africa. there are some steroid chemicals found in the sausage tree that are currently added to commercially available shampoos and facial creams.

Cotton Tree முள்ளிலவு

Bombax ceiba  from young to 6 or 7 years, the bark will have thorn to protect from its predator (the bark is preferred by deer and elephant either for feeding and rubbing). 

Bombax ceiba 16 years old tree without thorn, the stem become strong and can't be easily broken by wild animals.

The Western Ghats running for more than 1,500 kM in states of Maharastra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have been designated as one of 18 biodiversity hotspots in the world, and are providing a large number of ecological services/products of immense economic value to our society. They are the source for a number of major and minor rivers of peninsular India, and provide livelihood for millions of families. Some of the ecological services they are rendering to our society are:

Production of oxygen; recycling of water and control of humidity;

Source of perennial supply of water;

Providing thriving habitats for animals, birds, insects & plants;

Control of soil erosion & maintenance of soil fertility;

Control of air pollution through Carbon Sequestration;

A healthy upkeep of these Western Ghats (WGs) is crucial not only for each of the adjoining

Impact of Power Projects on Western Ghats
 

In the present scenario in India the power projects of concern to WGs can be broadly classified into the following categories:

Dam based hydel projects including small size hydel projects

Thermal projects based on fossil fuels like coal, diesel and gas

Nuclear power projects

Large size wind turbines: The large size wind mills, though deemed to be environmentally friendly,

Growing evidence that massive wind turbines threaten bird species;

Obstruction to flight path ;

Turbine noise driving away the grazing animals;

Construction activities on the edges of WGs can trigger land slides;

Noise pollution during construction periods.

Require forest lands for locating the wind mill, access roads and electricity network required to evacuate the  power.

அறிவித்து,  யானை பாதுகாப்பு முயற்சியை தீவிர படுத்தியுள்ளது. தற்பொழுது வனப்பகுதியில் 29000 யானைகள்  இருப்பதாக தெரியவருகிறது.

இது தவிர கோவில் மற்றும்

தனியார் வசம் 3500 யானைகள் உள்ளன.

Soursop (or) Prickly custard apple (Annona muricata) முள்ளு சீதா, fruiting season between December- February and May- July.
Full ripened fruit can measure up to 25 cm length.

The tree can grow well in any type of soil and prefers lowland areas between the altitudes of 0 metres to 1,200 metres.
